Mycotoxins are toxins produced by mold/fungi. They are called secondary metabolites, as they are not a living organisms, but poisons with various properties. The sole purpose of a mycotoxin is to destroy other cells, disrupt their metabolic properties, destroy their DNA, and eventually kill them off.

Once exposed to mycotoxins they may stay in the human body for years. The most common types of mycotoxins found in indoor water damaged environments are:

Of the three groups Aflatoxin B1 and Fumonisin B1 are the most toxic, documented to cause oxidative stress and cancer in humans. However, Aflatoxin is responsible for more deaths worldwide than any other mycotoxin.
